That Other Game 7 and the Heat’s Path to the Finals

Andrew Upshaw

Last night the Lakers and Denver had a really good game 7. This morning we’ll get another potential good-great game in what has been a great series so far between The Clippers and the Grizzlies. I wonder, though if injuries have hurt this series or helped the series continue. Game 6 was an entertaining game the whole way through. Memphis continued to put the ball in Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph‘s hand, with great results again. The Clippers fell behind but hung in there and even were up early in the fourth before faltering down the stretch. The Clippers stars Blake Griffin and Chris Paul gutted out the game but they just didn’t seem to have IT down the stretch. I kept waiting for Chris Paul to take over the game down the stretch but it never happened. Blake played well but he seemed more cautious the usual. Yeah, maybe they were just having off games, but if the injuries were a factor then Memphis escaped because the Chris Paul that I know would have shut them down in the fourth. He’s done it multiple times this series and we’re so accustomed to it that it seemed like he might have been limited physically. Going into game 7 Memphis has the momentum and the home-court advantage. The Clipper have the best 2 players in the series and in Chris Paul the best clutch player in the game. Hopefully their stars are able transcend their injuries rather than just gut them out. That’s what basketball and Clipper fans deserve. Memphis and the Clippers are neck and neck but I still believe a healthy Chris Paul doing Chris Paul things trumps everything in the end.

Miami plays their first game in the second round against the Pacers tomorrow. I feel like Miami will win this series in 5 or maybe 6 games. A few days I put up links to other NBA writers who feel that The Pacers might be a tough out for the Heat. The Heat have an easy path to the finals on paper as they no longer have to worry about Chicago. But they are still real thin behind their big three and  other teams like say, Boston aren’t afraid of them.  Boston would need Rajon Rondo to kill the Heat if that series were to materialize. Rondo hit a bunch of jumpers in the Celtics game 1 win over Philly and posted his 8th career triple double. he might have to average a triple double to beat the heat. I personally think that challenges will help the Heat more than breezing to the Finals. They need all of the reps and experience with adversity they can get after last year’s disappointment in the finals cuz whoever they play whiter it’s the Spurs, OKC or Lakers they’ll need to play with some fire, Lebron James especially.

Rhianna’s cool and everything…

But I’m feeling Elle Varner just as much if not more…

NBA Playoffs: 1st/2nd Round Crossroads

Andrew Upshaw (kind of)

It’s Thursday! I really don’t have anything in depth to write about just a few random thoughts and such. A bunch of other people wrote some ish that I liked so I’ll Throw in some Links:

Last night’s playoff games were pretty boring. I checked in on the Knicks-Heat game in the third and it was already over. i was kinda surprised to see the box score after the game. Did Carmelo Anthony wait until the game was over to start scoring? The series as a massive disappointment for knicks fans who wanted Melo to go Mano-a Mano with LeBron James. He played aight, Lebron played better but who else did the Knicks have? Amare has been a shell of his former self all year and he had ONE good game in the series. The Knicks were relying on Mike Bibby at the point. Mike Bibby

The Heat are playing Indiana in the second round. My instinct tells me that Miami will win easily but a lot of NBA experts I respect, namely John Hollinger say the series may be tough for the Heat. His reasoning is The Pacer’s depth and also the fact that their starting five have played just as well together as the Heat’s starting five. Miami’s stating five is Lebron and Dwayne Wade, the best two players in the league, Chris Bosh a Drake-like all-star, Mario Chalmers, the only other player on the Heat who is even close to average, and Haslem, who used to be kinda ok but isn’t  anymore and also isn’t a Center. The pacers have Danny Granger who is almost good enough to be an all-star. Darren Collison who’s also good or Geroge Hill, Roy Hibbert, who actually made the all-star team this year. David West who i think made some All-Star teams with the Hornets and is still good, but not THAT good and Paul George who is above average also known as good. So five good players and decent back up against a team with two great players, one very good player, one slightly below average player, and a bunch of wahed up role players. On paper it does seem like the Pacers could compete with Miami, who have the same exact weaknesses from last year. I still say Miami wins it in six games at the most. Hollinger says seven:

John Hollinger ESPN: Miami Heat vs. Indiana Pacers

The other game I sort of watched was Memphis vs. The LA Clippers. This game was notable for two reasons: Memphis fianly got their big men Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph involved offensively and crusied to an easy win and Chris Paul and Blake Griffin both injured themselves. Blake Griffin sprained his left knee and Chris Paul strained his right hip. Both guys are scheduled for MRIs today and it goes without saying that they both need to be able to play close to 100% for the Clippers to progress in the playoffs. The next game for the series is Friday in LA and I can’t really call it. We know both guys will gut it out though. I wouldn’t be surprised if Chris Paul plays his best game of the series next game actually, the guy is that great.

Rob Mahoney on The Grizzlies Late Game Problems

Tonight The Lakers play Denever in game 6 and Chicago plays Philly down 3-2. I’d like the Lakers to win game 6 but Denver’s tough at home and the series has been closer than we think.Through five games the Lakers have outscored denver by five.  I’ll be looking for the Lakers to go to their big men more. Last game Kobe Bryant took the offense over completely and Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum were afterthoughts.Kobe had a great game but they still lost so I expect Kobe to dial it down and look to get the ball inside more. Finally i have a link to a post by Ian Levy of Hardwood Paroxysm. He looks at the laker’s offense and wonder why they run so many Kobe isolations as opposed to post-up for Bynum and Gasol. The findings show that Gasol and Bynum-centic plays are the most successful plays the Laker’s run, which is partially due to the threat of Kobe. Interestingly to me is that Kobe is most effective scoring off of screens and spotting up as opposed to off the dribble.

Offensive Geometry: Ian Levy

Finally heres a pic of Rhianna, cuz she’s fine as hell AND crazy. Right now it’s kinda cool but hopefully not dangerous. we don’t want anything bad happening to Rhianna.

Lakers Vs. Clippers thoughts

By Andrew Upshaw

Rivalries are made during the playoffs. Kobe said it after the Lakers win last night against the Clippers. Kobe right right but the  Lakers and Clippers have one in the making. Last night was a great regular season NBA game and the best game the Laker’s have played in quite a while. Pau had a great game and was very aggressive. he scored 17 in the first half and finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds, and also had 4 assists. Kobe played the facilitator role and struggled for 3 quarters turning the ball over 6 times. He recovered in the fourth scoring 12 points. Bynum was solid and had 19 points and 4 blocks. Blake Griffin had a great game for the Clippers scoring 26 even though Pau played pretty good D. Pau forced Blake to take the jumper but Blake hit it more often than not. Chris paul was rusty from not playing for five games but was able to pass well (12 assists to only 4 points). The game was physical and exciting. That’s how the Clippers roll with Blake and DeAndre Jordan throwing down dunks and pushing people around. The Lakers pushed back last night and there was a lot of trash talk. My favorite was the Gasol/Chris Paul incident near the end of the game. You can’t blame Pau Gasol for wanting to rub Chris Paul’s head, he looks like a teddy bear. As greta as that victory was, Chris Paul wasn’t at full strength and will bring his A game he next time around. That won’t be until April and by then well know how for real both of these teams are.

The key to the lakers win as much as Pau’s play was the play of the role players. Fisher stepped up and hit a few threes and rookie Andrew Goudelock scored 14 points. Metta only scored 3 poitns but he had 7 assists and played great defense. This has been the laker’s biggest problem all year and their greatest concern going forward. Pau Gasol complaining about touches will get more attention, but role players haven’t been doing anything. In order for the lakers to win they need another guy or two outside of Pau, Kobe, and Bynum to hit some shots. Even superstars are going to struggle. Last night Kobe started off slow but Pau and Goudelock’s scoring kept the Lakers in it until Kobe could get himself going. These kind of things need to happen night in and night out. Back in the day the Lakers could count on Fisher to drain threes on the regular and got key contributions from guys like Trevor Ariza and yes, even Metta in his Ron Artest days. The Lakers need their current reverses and role players to do the same. The Kobe/Pau/Bynum drama is still there, but it was there even when the Lakers were winning championships. Kobe has been fluctuating between shooting too much and playing the right way his entire career. It’s how he rolls. Kobe and Pau are who they are. The rest of the Lakers need to figure out who they are.

Kevin Ding on Gasol

Here Kevin Ding talks about Gasol’s play last night and how he can continue playing well going forward. I agree in part that Gasol needs to be aggressive but I also think Pau has a point in complaining about hs lack of touches in the post. Pau can hit the jumper but that’s not his game, he’s a great low post player and thats where he needs the ball.

More Pau ish by the guys at Silver Screen and Roll
